So after days of searching and testing and checking logs, I found a page that mentions a similar problem with the big 8.1 update that was recently released and that it could have problems installing if you have a VPN program installed. Everything was fine but this is a large update with a bunch of stuff in it so I need to get it installed or I am sure it will be one of those that prevents a later update.
